INDA 1st Birthday Conference

I invite you to join us in celebration of INDA's first birthday. To mark the end of the first year for INDA, we have organised a day long conference on 'Exploring cutting edge development in .Net Technologies'.

It will take place on Tuesday 25Th of October in the Morrisson Hotel.

The highlights of our conference will include a presentation by world famous programmer, author and regular columnist Dino Esposito on 'Extending ASP.Net 2.0', who is coming to Ireland for the first time to our user group, courtesy of INETA, and a talk by Ian Griffiths from INETA UK on 'Avalon: The Future of Windows'.

Other topics covered on the day will include a presentation on 'Domain Specific Languages (DSLs)' by Eamon O'Tuathail and 'Windows Communication Foundation Services' by Paul Fallon.

The conference includes a buffet lunch and a drinks and tapas reception at the end of the day.

Agenda:

Extending ASP.NET with Custom Expression Builders - Dino Esposito

Captured by the effectiveness and simplicity of $-expressions in ASP.NET 2.0? Wondering how it works and if you can one day write your own expressions? Come and hear.

This talk will provide a broad coverage of expressions in ASP.NET, starting with ASP-style code blocks and binding #-expressions in ASP.NET 1.x.

You'll see why a third type of expression is needed in 2.0, and at the end of it all, you'll probably be mumbling on the fact that even a fourth should be considered.

Filled with lots of insights and undocumented details, this demo-laden presentation will reveal the world of ASP.NET page parsing and compilation. Still doubtful about the goal of this talk? OK.

You'll see why the following works and its differences with <%= ... %>and <%# ... %>. In addition, you'll learn how to implement the following:

You gotta come!

In the software industry for the past 15 years, Dino developed hands-on experience and skills in architecting and building distributed systems for banking and insurance companies and, in general, in industry contexts where the demand for security, performance, and interoperability is dramatically high. Today, he focuses almost entirely on .NET technologies with a particular interest for ASP.NET, data access, and workflow applications. He offers training, mentoring, and consulting services through Solid Quality Learning—a recognized worldwide leader in the industry—in both Europe and United States.

Every month, at least five different magazines and Web sites throughout the world publish Dino’s articles covering topics ranging from Web development to data access and from software best practices to Web services. Prolific author, Dino writes monthly the "Cutting Edge" column for MSDN Magazine and the ASP.NET-2-The-Max newsletter for the Dr.Dobb’s Journal. Considered an authoritative and acknowledgeable expert in Web applications built with .NET technologies, Dino contributes to the Microsoft’s content platform for developers and IT consultants. Check out his articles on a variety of MSDN Developer Centers such as ASP.NET, security, data access.

Dino has written an array of books, most of which are considered state-of-the-art in their respective areas. More recent books are “Programming Microsoft ASP.NET” from Microsoft Press, 2003 and “Applied XML Programming with the .NET Framework”, from Microsoft Press, 2002. Still requested, quoted and, more importantly, used by developers worldwide is “Visual C++ Windows Shell Programming”, Apress, which dates back at 1998 and remains the unique reference for whoever plans to extend the navigation capabilities of the Windows operating system.

Two new books will be out by the end of 2005—“Programming Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0 Applications—Core Reference” and “Programming Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0 Applications—Advanced Topics”.

Dino regularly speaks at industry conferences all over the world (Microsoft TechEd, Microsoft DevDays, DevConnections, DevWeek, WinDev) and local technical conferences and meetings in Europe and United States.

Dino lives near Rome, Italy.

Windows Pressentation Foundation: The Future of Windows - Ian Griffiths

In this presentation Ian Griffiths looks at Windows Presentation Foundation, the new graphical subsystem that will be the foundation of all graphics in Windows Vista (formerly known as Longhorn).(A version will also be made available for Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server at the same time that Windows Vista ships.)

The talk will discuss why we need Avalon, and will show how to work with it. Along the way we will look at key features of WPF such as XAML, composition, layout, animation, and data binding.

We will also take a broader view of Vista's offerings, seeing how WPF fits into the future of Windows.

Ian is a freelance software developer and consultant. He specializes in digital imaging applications, mainly broadcast video and medical imaging systems.

When not developing software, Ian works as an instructor and course author for DevelopMentor.

Ian is also the co-author of two books: .NET Windows Forms in a Nutshell and Mastering Visual Studio .NET, both by O'Reilly.  Ian is an MVP in C#.

Windows Communication Foundation Presentation - Paul Fallon

In this session, Paul Fallon will provide a presentation to Windows Communication Foundation with some advanced demos, Microsoft’s upcoming unified programming model for building distributed applications that are service oriented.

Paul will provide an overview of WCF's capabilities, including security, reliable messaging, and transaction support; as well as some of the key concepts on how to build service oriented applications today and prescriptive guidance to using ASMX, WSE, Enterprise Services, .NET Remoting and MSMQ.

Paul Fallon currently works as an independent consultant based in Dublin, Ireland.

He focuses on providing advice and guidance on building distributed systems on the Microsoft platform. He provides assistance to customers through all parts of the development lifecycle in the form of technical workshops, architecture reviews, proof’s of concepts, project seeding and troubleshooting.

Since 2000, he has been working with .NET, developing solutions with XML, Web Services and Enterprise Services and prior to being an early adopter of .NET he developed solutions with VC++, ATL, MFC and COM. Today, Paul focuses on software architecture, service orientation, 64bit computing and the path to Indigo, and assists developers and architects to leverage the .NET platform to its fullest. Paul can be contacted through his blog (PaulFallon.com), where he blogs about current and future Microsoft developer technologies.

Domain Specific Languages (DSLs) - Eamon O'Tuathail

The DSL concept is the most likely source of significant developer productivity enhancement on the horizon. DSLs flow from the idea of software product lines, which is the undestanding that though we tackle many projects that are similar, each has significant variability points.

A DSL narrowly focuses on a specific task and offers graphical model or textual representation, code generation and other tools optimised for that task. We explore the Microsoft DSL Tools For Visual Studio 2005 - which is an add-on that enables developers quickly create rich DSLs that are integrated with the VS IDE.

As a practical example, we explore how to create our own DSL to generate custom Resource Managers using the .NET v2's System.Transaction namespace.

Eamon O'Tuathail  provides consultancy and training on advanced areas of .NET.

He is the author of the C#+ Extensions spec and coauthor of IETF RFC3288. He is the winner of the Microsoft EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) Security Developer Championship.

Eamon believes that software patents will have an extremely detrimental effect on small European ISVs - hence he supports the efforts of FFII and encourages all European .NET developers to do likewise.
